Azure Operational Insights: Security and Audit

Standard

In one of my last OpsMgr deployments I configured Audit Collection Services for auditing security related information. ACS is still working great but there were no improvements made to ACS since OpsMgr 2007 R2. So it’s lacking high-availability possibilities, for now I’ve created my own solution, but still it’s a pity that there is not much improvement. With OpInsights we get a new solution for security auditing. With the Intelligence Pack Security and Audit you can send your security information to OpInsights, when uploaded you can use the OpInsights functionality to query your information.

Azure Operational Insights: Intelligence Packs

Standard

Yesterday I finally published my first Operational Insights blogpost. This blogpost described a very basic approach in creating an OpInsights account and installing the Microsoft Monitoring Agent on your servers. I ended this blogpost with an active account and 5 connected servers. The next step is to activate intelligence packs. But let we first look into intelligence packs. Intelligence Packs contain a collection of logic, visualization and data acquisition rules. These packs are used inside OpInsights to add extra functionality to OpInsights. You can compare them to Management Packs which we know from Operations Manager. We have the following Intelligence Packs available in OpInsights:

SCOM 2012: Global Service Monitor Certificate Error

Standard

Today I run into an issue with the Global Service Monitor configuration in my SCOM 2012 R2 environment. The GSM subscription was configured some time ago but I was forgotten with which account this was done. For some time I received alerts that I had to renew my certificate for the communication with GSM in Azure. After some time the Global Service Monitor stopped working. I tried to renew the certificate with another subscription credentials but that failed. I could not find a very easy solution so I decided to reset the whole Global Service monitor implementation. In this blogpost I want to explain what I did.

Azure Operational Insights: What, Where and How?

Standard

As a big fan of System Center Operations Manager I’m also interested in the development of Microsoft Azure Operational Insights (OpInsights). But what is OpInsights? What functionality do we get with OpInsights? Well looking at the website we get the following functionality:

  • Log Management – Collect, Combine, correlate and visualize all your machine data
  • Capacity Planning – Manage your datacenter capacity
  • Update Assessment – Ensure you server are up to date
  • Change Tracking – Track server configuration changes

Based on the above list of functionality can we place OpInsights in a solution category like monitoring, server/client management, etc. At this moment it’s a combination different solutions but none of them are fully implemented. In my opinion OpInsights is a great data analyzing tool for analyzing your systems data, with OpInsights you can easily analyze and visualize that data. But at this moment it is not (yet) a monitoring solution which you can use to monitor your environment.
